However, at the time of their military service, they were not even recognized as citizens of the country they fought so valiantly to defend. They were the men who comprised the 1st Kansas Colored Infantry. Their regiment compiled a proud campaign record in Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, and the Indian Territory during the Civil War.
